Today saw the introduction of an importance piece of legislation. New laws cracking down on zero-hour contracts and precarious employment come into effect today. This offers protection for workers in a range of industries.

Zero-hour and low-hours contracts gave employers complete discretion when it came to working hours. Some bosses, taking advantage of this, shamelessly used the threat of reduced hours to keep workers in-line and to punish workers. This caused unnecessary stress and also made it impossible for workers to plan for the future and budget as they were unsure of their hours.

The new Employment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2018 bans zero hour contracts in most circumstances; gives workers more security over their hours and income; requires employers to furnish workers with their core conditions of employment within five days; and provides for minimum payments in cases where the employer fails to provide an employee with work.
